Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole wheat flour (or oat flour for a softer bite)
  • ½ cup cooked bacon, finely chopped (low-sodium, lean, grease drained)
  • ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese (mild, low-sodium)
  • 1 large egg
  • ¼ cup water or low-sodium chicken broth

Equipment

  • Mixing bowl
  • Whisk
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or silicone baking mat
  • Wire cooling rack

Method

  1. Combine wet ingredients — In a medium bowl, whisk together the egg and water (or low-sodium broth) until smooth and slightly frothy.
  2. Add bacon and cheese — Stir in the finely chopped cooked bacon and shredded cheese until evenly distributed.
  3. Add flour and form the dough — Gradually add the flour, about ¼ cup at a time, mixing gently until a dough forms. Knead lightly by hand until firm but pliable, like a soft cookie dough. Add a little more flour if sticky, or a teaspoon of water/broth at a time if too dry.
  4. Roll out the dough — Dust your counter with flour and roll dough to about ¼ inch thick, keeping it even. Cut into shapes with cookie cutters (bones, hearts) or slice into small squares.
  5. Bake to perfection — Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Arrange treats with a small gap between each and bake 20–25 minutes, until golden brown at the edges. For extra crunch, turn off the oven and let treats sit inside for another 10 minutes as it cools.
  6. Cool completely — Transfer to a wire rack and let cool fully before storing or serving.

Notes

Use low-sodium bacon, cheese, and broth wherever possible dogs have much more sensitive sodium requirements than humans.
Cool cooked bacon completely before adding it to the mix hot grease can melt the cheese prematurely and make the dough sticky.
Chilling the dough for 10–15 minutes before rolling makes it easier to cut clean shapes.
Storage: airtight container at room temperature up to 7 days, refrigerate up to 3 weeks, or freeze up to 3 months. If treats soften, re-crisp in the oven at 325°F for 5 minutes.
Portion tip: one small (1-inch) biscuit is suitable for a medium-sized dog adjust by weight and daily calorie intake. These are occasional treats, not meal replacements.
Variations: swap bacon for shredded cooked chicken, add a tablespoon of chopped parsley for fresh breath benefits, or substitute half the flour with oat flour for a softer bite.
Consult your vet before introducing new ingredients if your dog has dietary restrictions or sensitivities.
