Method
- Prepare your workspace — Preheat oven to 160–170°C (325°F). Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Wash, peel, and finely grate your vegetables.
- Prepare the vegetables — Grate carrots finely. If using zucchini, squeeze out excess water with a clean cloth. If using pumpkin, make sure it's plain and unsweetened. Aim for soft, moist vegetables — not watery, not chunky.
- Mix the protein base — In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, eggs, and grated vegetables by hand or with a sturdy spoon until sticky and cohesive.
- Gradually add dry ingredients — Add oat flour ½ cup at a time, mixing thoroughly after each addition. Stop once the dough holds together, no longer sticks aggressively to your hands, and can be rolled without cracking. Avoid adding too much flour — it dries out the sticks.
- Let the dough rest — Cover the bowl and let the dough rest for 10–15 minutes so the oats can absorb moisture and the texture stabilizes.
- Shape the chew sticks — Divide the dough based on your dog's size: long sticks for medium-large dogs, short thin sticks for small dogs. Aim for even thickness, no sharp edges, smooth surfaces.
- Arrange on the tray — Place chew sticks on the parchment-lined tray with space between each — don't overcrowd, since airflow matters for even baking.
- Bake low and slow — Bake at 160–170°C (325°F) for 45 minutes, flipping each stick and rotating the tray halfway through. For firmer chews, reduce oven to 140°C (285°F) and bake an additional 20–30 minutes.
- Cool completely — Remove from the oven and let cool for at least 1 hour before serving — this allows moisture to redistribute and the final chew texture to develop.
Notes
Use lean ground beef (85–90%) to avoid excess fat that could upset digestion.
Don't rush the low-and-slow bake high heat creates hard exteriors and soft, underdone interiors.
Don't skip the dough rest or cooling time both are essential for the right final texture.
Adjust for your dog: shorter bake for gentle chewers, longer/lower bake for strong chewers, thicker sticks for seniors, short supervised sticks for puppies. Always test one stick before offering a full batch.
Storage: refrigerate for 5–7 days, or freeze for up to 3 months. Freeze in portions and thaw overnight in the fridge.
Serving guide: small dogs ½ stick 2–3x weekly, medium dogs 1 stick 2–3x weekly, large dogs 1–2 sticks weekly. Always monitor your dog's digestion.
Optional add-ins: chopped parsley for fresh breath, turmeric for anti-inflammatory support, coconut oil for healthy fats and aroma.
These are treats, not daily meals.
