Ingredients

  • 1 cup grated carrot (about 2 medium carrots)
  • 1 cup grated apple, peeled and cored
  • 1 ½ cup whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup rolled oats
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or coconut oil
  • 1 tbsp water

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Silicone baking mat
  • Mixing bowl
  • Rolling pin
  • Cookie cutters
  • Wire cooling rack

Method

  1. Preheat and prep — Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone baking mat.
  2. Mix the ingredients — In a large bowl, combine grated carrot, grated apple, flour, oats, egg, and oil. Stir until well mixed — dough should be slightly sticky but not wet. Add water a teaspoon at a time if too dry.
  3. Roll and cut — Lightly flour your work surface and roll dough to about ¼-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to create shapes (bones, paws, hearts, or squares). Place on the prepared baking sheet, leaving space between each.
  4. Bake until crunchy — Bake 25–30 minutes, until golden brown and crisp.
  5. Extra crisp (optional) — Turn off the oven and leave treats inside with the door slightly open as it cools, for a deeper crunch.
  6. Cool and serve — Remove treats and let cool completely on a wire rack before serving.

Notes

Skip the apple seeds and core they contain small amounts of cyanide and aren't safe for dogs.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 10 days, refrigerate for up to 2 weeks, or freeze for up to 3 months (thaw naturally before serving).
Want them softer? Bake for 18–20 minutes instead for a chewy texture.
Safe for puppies in small amounts break into smaller pieces and introduce slowly.
Swap in pumpkin, pear, or zucchini for the carrot/apple if you like.
