Method
- Combine wet ingredients — In a medium bowl, whisk together the chicken broth, egg, and olive oil until smooth and lightly frothy.
- Add the dry ingredients — Slowly add the whole wheat flour and oat flour into the wet mixture, starting with half, stirring, then adding the rest gradually. Switch to kneading by hand once it thickens, forming a soft but firm dough. Add a little flour if sticky, or a teaspoon of broth at a time if too dry.
- Form and roll the dough — Lightly flour your countertop and rolling pin. Roll the dough to about ¼ inch thick, keeping it even. Cut with bone, paw, or heart-shaped cutters, or slice into squares.
- Bake until crisp and golden — Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Arrange cutouts with space between each and bake 20–25 minutes, until edges are golden and firm. For extra crunch, turn off the oven and let treats sit inside as it cools.
- Cool completely — Transfer to a wire rack and let cool fully before serving or storing.
Notes
Always use unsalted or low-sodium chicken broth with no onion or garlic these are unsafe for dogs.
Room-temperature ingredients blend more evenly, helping the dough form without cracking.
The dough should hold its shape too much broth will make it sticky; add liquid gradually.
Storage: airtight container at room temperature up to 1 week, refrigerate up to 3 weeks, or freeze up to 3 months. If treats soften, re-crisp in the oven at 325°F for 5 minutes.
Serving ideas: cut smaller for training rewards, crumble over kibble as a meal enhancer, or dip half in unsweetened Greek yogurt and freeze for a decorative treat.
Variations: add chopped parsley for fresh breath, mix in grated carrot for sweetness, add shredded cheddar for richness, or use all oat flour for a gluten-free, softer texture.
These treats complement a balanced diet they shouldn't replace regular meals.
