Ingredients

  • 1 ½ lb lean ground beef or ground turkey, plain and unseasoned
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ cup plain rolled oats
  • ½ cup finely grated carrot
  • ½ cup finely chopped zucchini
  • ¼ cup plain pumpkin purée (optional)
  • 4 tbsp plain water, only if needed

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Box grater or food processor
  • Loaf pan
  • Parchment paper (optional)
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Food thermometer (recommended)
  • Airtight container for storage

Method

  1. Preheat your oven — Preheat to 350°F (175°C). Line a loaf pan with parchment paper for easier cleanup, if desired.
  2. Prepare the vegetables — Wash the carrot and zucchini thoroughly. Grate the carrot finely and finely grate or chop the zucchini. If using pumpkin purée, make sure it's 100% plain, not pie filling.
  3. Combine the meat and egg — Place the ground beef or turkey in a large bowl and gently mix in the egg.
  4. Add the oats — Add the plain rolled oats and mix in.
  5. Add the vegetables — Add the grated carrot, zucchini, and pumpkin purée (if using). Mix until evenly distributed the mixture should be moist but not overly wet. Add water a tablespoon at a time if needed. Avoid overmixing.
  6. Shape the meatloaf — Transfer the mixture to the prepared loaf pan and press down gently with a spoon or spatula to create an even surface. No glaze or topping needed.
  7. Bake until fully cooked — Bake until the meat reaches a safe internal temperature for the type of meat used, checking with a food thermometer. Cooking time varies by meat type, loaf size, and oven.
  8. Cool completely — Remove from the oven and let cool completely before serving. Never serve piping hot.

Notes

Use plain, unseasoned meat pre-seasoned products may already contain salt, onion, or garlic.
Never add onion, garlic, onion/garlic powder, excess salt, hot peppers, spicy seasonings, ketchup or heavy sauces, xylitol, grapes, raisins, chocolate, alcohol, or cooked bones.
Use only 100% plain pumpkin purée, never pumpkin pie filling.
Always confirm doneness with a food thermometer rather than relying on time alone, since cooking time varies with meat type and loaf size.
This is an occasional meal, topper, or treat not a nutritionally complete daily diet unless specifically formulated by a veterinarian or veterinary nutritionist.
Introduce new ingredients slowly, starting with a small serving, especially for dogs unfamiliar with pumpkin, zucchini, or oats.
Storage: refrigerate cooled, sliced portions in an airtight container and use within a few days. For longer storage, freeze individual portions and thaw safely in the refrigerator before serving.
Variations: try turkey with mashed sweet potato, beef with chopped green beans, chicken with pumpkin, or swap part of the oats for plain cooked rice.
Consult your veterinarian before feeding this regularly, before introducing it to puppies, or if your dog has allergies, digestive sensitivities, or is on a therapeutic diet.
